Our Interview with Marie-Philippe
Q: Your unique approach, which weaves together physical movement and the creative process, is rather rare and fascinating. What advice would you like to share with our community about exploring these two dimensions jointly and deepening their connection with themselves?
A: Thank you for the kind words! I believe we're taught early on to fit into either the artist or athlete box, when in reality, physical movement and creativity nourish each other and are interconnected. When we move, we activate blood circulation, providing more oxygen to the prefrontal cortex, which enhances cognitive functions related to adaptation and creative thinking. Planning a writing or brainstorming session right after movement practice can be interesting to explore! On a more personal level, I suggest keeping a notebook near your exercise mat and noting ideas and emotions that surface during physical effort! The results can be surprising.
Q: As a storyteller and communicator, people see you as a source of inspiration. How does that make you feel?
A: That's very kind and generous. I think many of us return to interests we had in childhood. I've always loved reading, watching TV, and speaking in front of the class! Haha! I've made it my career, so I don't know if it's inspiring, but I encourage anyone who feels lost to ask themselves: what did I love doing as a child?
Q: What excites you most about storytelling and creating bridges between people and ideas?
A: It helps me better understand the world we live in and nurtures hope, enthusiasm, joy, and empathy!
Q: What motivates you daily to promote writing and movement as tools for self-discovery?
A: Being misaligned in life is very difficult and uncomfortable. I think by guiding people through movement and writing, I humbly contribute to opening paths toward greater self-knowledge, which can lead to different choices and new possibilities! I find it fun and practical.
Q: What regular practices help you nurture your well-being, creativity, and balance?
A: Daily, I do journaling in the morning, movement during the day, and reading in the evening. Throughout the year, I also need lots of rest and alone time. It's not for everyone, but I think it's good to say it because so many people feel guilty about resting!
Q: Where do you see your practice in the coming months? What projects are particularly close to your heart right now?
A: With L'Auberge sur mer in Notre-Dame-du-Portage, I've created the Movements and Tides retreat, which invites a group of 40 people to come rest, move, and connect by the river. It's a project that brings together everything I love, and the first edition was absolutely magical! We're returning with a second edition from May 23-25, 2025.
Q: What or who makes you laugh the most in your daily life?
A: My partner and my friends. I think it's essential to surround yourself with quick-witted people to get through life with more lightness!
Q: What book, series, or artwork inspires you right now?
A: The entire body of work by American artist Suleika Jaouad inspires me greatly. Diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia, she continues to write and paint. Her motto: "Survival is a creative act." She teaches me to create with what we have in the moment, without waiting. Her new book, "The Book of Alchemy: A Creative Practice for an Inspired Life," will be released in April 2025.
Q: If you could give advice to 20-year-old Marie-Philippe, what would it be?
A: ENJOY! Travel alone, travel with your friends, intentionally step out of your comfort zone because life becomes more complex with age, and these experiences will be very useful in the future.
Q: When and where have you felt the most peace or accomplishment in your journey?
A: In 2022, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, and through this challenge, I became my own advocate. I learned to set my boundaries, make huge decisions, and truly trust myself. It's certainly my greatest accomplishment!
Q: What's your favorite travel destination for rejuvenation or finding new ideas?
A: Any travel has the potential to inspire us, but I have a particular affection for Mexico, which has so much to offer in terms of culture, gastronomy, design, and biodiversity. I also love island destinations like Lanzarote, a unique volcanic island.
